The Land’s History—and Its Future

Trailhead’s lands have undergone significant changes since the mid-1900s. In 1945, Galloway Lands began operating on the land, known then as Managed Forest #37. Galloway logged the land through periodic cycles until the early 1990s.

Fully reforested, the land is now under the stewardship of Reto Barrington—a 20-year resident of Fernie with plans to develop around 100 secluded single-family homesites amid nearly 500 acres of Rocky Mountain forest. To demonstrate the sincerity of his commitments to conservation, Reto has transferred 232 acres of Trailhead land to a conservation organization dedicated to environmental protection and public recreational access.

To commemorate the land’s history, Trailhead’s street names are drawn from horse logging tradition.
